This one picks up right where You Don’t Want a Unicorn left off。 It’s not just that dragons chase or the drool。 It’s not even the truth about charcoal, it’s really about space。 Dragons are, after all, ginormous! They just won’t fit in your house。 So why not get something smaller? Just don’t let that new pet anywhere near those cupcakes。 Uh oh, too late。 “Good luck, kid!”
Heidi,
Libraries are the best! Super cute read, had us laughing。 Best enjoyed after the Unicorn book。
SheAintGotNoShoes,

It's hard to make sequels even better and funnier than the original, but Ame Dyckman and Liz Climo have managed to do just that。 It's hard to make sequels even better and funnier than the original, but Ame Dyckman and Liz Climo have managed to do just that。 。。。more
Rachel,
I wanted this to be as cute as the first book, "You Don't Want a Unicorn", as I usually love Ame Dyckman's books。 However the book fell flat with the exception of the "this is where charcoal comes from" bit, as my son was amused by the poop joke and we both liked the image of a dragon scooting across the floor like a dog。 The basic premise of this book is that the boy finds out that mythical creatures do not make good pets, and it is much easier to have a normal pet like a hamster, but watch out I wanted this to be as cute as the first book, "You Don't Want a Unicorn", as I usually love Ame Dyckman's books。 However the book fell flat with the exception of the "this is where charcoal comes from" bit, as my son was amused by the poop joke and we both liked the image of a dragon scooting across the floor like a dog。 The basic premise of this book is that the boy finds out that mythical creatures do not make good pets, and it is much easier to have a normal pet like a hamster, but watch out if they accidentally ingest some unicorn poop, then the fun happens。 Recommended for ages 4-8, 3 stars。 。。。more
Dave,
Fun book with bright illustrations and plenty of cheeky snigger humour。 Who knew that unicorns pooed cupcakes and dragons pooed charcoal? Lily chose this from the library and I read to the kids a few times。 I think they still want a dragon。 They just want a bigger house。
La Coccinelle,
This is a simple, but fun, picture book about a kid who wishes for a dragon。。。 and gets more than he bargained for。I can't help but feel that I'm missing something by not having read You Don't Want a Unicorn! first。 There are lots of unicorn references throughout this book, in both the text and illustrations。 That's not to say that you can't get something out of it on its own; I'm just more curious now about the first book。There are some silly, puerile moments here, but overall, it's a fun take This is a simple, but fun, picture book about a kid who wishes for a dragon。。。 and gets more than he bargained for。I can't help but feel that I'm missing something by not having read You Don't Want a Unicorn! first。 There are lots of unicorn references throughout this book, in both the text and illustrations。 That's not to say that you can't get something out of it on its own; I'm just more curious now about the first book。There are some silly, puerile moments here, but overall, it's a fun take on dragons and the things we tend not to think about when we're wishing for them as pets。Quotable moment: 。。。more

After learning a unicorn is not a good pet, a boy gets the dragon he wished for。 Big mistake! After the fun part, the problems begin。 Funny story and illustrations。
Jessica,
I'd been waiting for this one。 My student loved the first one and this one is just as dear。 It surprised me at the end about the gerbils。 I do love the expressions on the boy's face。 I'd been waiting for this one。 My student loved the first one and this one is just as dear。 It surprised me at the end about the gerbils。 I do love the expressions on the boy's face。 。。。more

Sheri,
I love books by Ame, I started with Pat and her brother Wolfie。 And then the Unicorn and now why you don't want to bring home a pet dragon。 Liz Climo illustrates and adds details that make me laugh out loud before and after the text。 I laughed at the unicorn cupcakes and the barbecue charcoal and even the kids I read it to, liked it。 You have to read this book and the others to really enjoy the author's sense of humor combined with the illustrator。 I love books by Ame, I started with Pat and her brother Wolfie。 And then the Unicorn and now why you don't want to bring home a pet dragon。 Liz Climo illustrates and adds details that make me laugh out loud before and after the text。 I laughed at the unicorn cupcakes and the barbecue charcoal and even the kids I read it to, liked it。 You have to read this book and the others to really enjoy the author's sense of humor combined with the illustrator。 。。。more

For kids who enjoyed "You Don't Want a Unicorn," here is the sequel。 In this one, the little boy gets the dragon he wished for。。。 except of course that having a pet dragon creates problems he hadn't previously imagined。 It's funny and has a surprising ending。 Kid enjoyed it。 For kids who enjoyed "You Don't Want a Unicorn," here is the sequel。 In this one, the little boy gets the dragon he wished for。。。 except of course that having a pet dragon creates problems he hadn't previously imagined。 It's funny and has a surprising ending。 Kid enjoyed it。 。。。more

Cute but not as cute as the Unicorn version。
MeganRuth - Alohamora Open a Book,
Kids may like this one, but it felt a little flat to me。 Not a ton of substance。 Though, it does try to be silly。 Dragon lovers will definitely enjoy it though。

Two very popular people in children’s current day literature team up to create funny, sometimes gross book about pet choices。Fun illustrations with a hidden cover and cute endpapers。
Jennifer,
For the most part, this book is not my cup of cocoa。 That being said, the final page ("Good Luck, Kid") is what bumped this up to a 4-star。 There was something about that illustration/moment that just made me chuckle。 For the most part, this book is not my cup of cocoa。 That being said, the final page ("Good Luck, Kid") is what bumped this up to a 4-star。 There was something about that illustration/moment that just made me chuckle。 。。。more
